If you’re old enough, you may remember the quirky 1990’s film LA Story starring Steve Martin. In the movie, Steve Martin plays a weatherman who receives romantic advice from glowing freeway signs around Los Angeles. It’s playful, funny, and strangely memorable.

Ever since seeing that movie, I’ve looked at road signs a little differently.

When I see a STOP sign, I naturally stop the car—but sometimes I also think about the other areas of life where we need to pause. Stop being so hard on ourselves. Stop carrying shame. Stop making decisions out of fear.

Sometimes life has a way of sending us signs when we need them most.

One of my favorite signs in Orange County is the old “Deer Crossing” sign on Crown Valley Parkway. Surrounded by busy traffic and thousands of homes, it feels hilariously out of place. I can’t remember the last time anyone actually saw a deer crossing there, but I still smile every time I pass it.

Driving the 5 Freeway through Orange County is its own experience. Every car tells a story. Some drivers are heading to work, some to school, some to the beach—and some may be heading to PRC Medical Clinic in San Clemente or Mission Viejo.

There’s the speeding car filled with clouds of vape smoke. The busy mom van packed with snacks, backpacks, and toddlers. The nervous new driver gripping the wheel a little too tightly. Everyone is carrying something unseen.

Our San Clemente clinic sits just off Avenida de la Estrella near the Avenida Palizada exit. Interestingly, “Palizada” translates to “fence” or “protective enclosure.” That meaning has always felt significant to me because it reflects how we care for our clients—with compassion, confidentiality, and protection for their emotional well-being.

“Avenida de la Estrella” means “Avenue of the Stars.” There’s something hopeful in that name too. Even when life feels uncertain, dreams do not have to disappear. An unexpected pregnancy does not mean your future is over.
