The definition of resolution (according to Google) is: a firm decision to do or not to do something. If we are going to “do” or “not do” something, it should be good for our soul, more than anything else. So what does our friend Google define as a soul?: the spiritual or immaterial part of a human being, regarded as immortal. a person’s moral or emotional nature or sense of identity. At Pregnancy Resource Center Medical Clinic, we see clients making decisions that affect both their souls and their resolutions. hence reSOULutions. They choose to make choices that are not always easy. It’s is our hope, always, that the resolution our clients make, are good for them and for their soul.
Some of our clients are making a pregnancy decision or struggling with the fear of a potential sexually transmitted disease. These are much bigger “life/soul affecters” than worrying about losing 10 pounds and eating more lettuce, Yes? If you are facing a life choice like many of our clients, we want to help you see the long term SOULutions to your current situation. There is hope in making a choice that is going to make you a success in your spirit, rather than a short-term choice that gives your soul heartache.
For fun – here are a few lists through the years of resolutions in America. From a Bishop in 1909, to the full circle made by Time Magazine in 2016, notice how they have changed, or remained the same over the years.
Resolution History Lesson
In 1909, Bishop John A Vincent had a very simple resolve…
A Resolve For Every Morning of the New Year
I will try to live a simple and serene life repelling promptly every thought of discontent, anxiety, discouragement, impurity and self-seeking, cultivating cheerfulness, magnanimity, charity, and the habit of holy silence, exercising economy in expenditure, carefulness in conversation, diligence in appointed service, fidelity to every trust and a child like trust in God.
In 2012, Time Magazine had these as the top resolutions.
- Lose weight and get fit
- Quit smoking
- Learn something new
- Get out of debt and save money
- Spend more time with family.
Followed with things like, travel, stress less, volunteer and drink less was at number ten. Eleven short months later according to MIC.com , “drink less” is at number 2 and Quit smoking has gone down to number 4.
- Eat Healthy exercise regularly
- Drink Less,
- Learn something new stayed at number?
- Quit smoking
- Better work life balance
By 2016 Time magazine had created a “Spiritual New Years Resolutions” list.
- Engage people with more than pexels.
- Increase kindness
- Take your Soul seriously
- Choose someone to forgive
- In forgiving include yourself.
TIME magazine is now focusing on things that will heal and brighten a soul. Believe it or not, a happy soul, can actually bring more desire to do things like save money to travel, or eat healthier, be outside with friends on a hike or enjoy time at the beach.
Good for your Soul
Studies show, when our soul is depressed, we withdraw, drink more, spend more time alone, eat too much, or sometimes eat too little. Click here for Googles list of results of depression..
Decision-making effects our every day choices. Some are easy such as a delicious doughnut verses green kale juice (there I said it, THE word of 2016, kale, kale kale!). The doughnut may be great for the moment you are eating it – but you may regret it soon after. This type of regret can be satisfied. A walk on the beach trail to burn off those calories can fix a bad choice. Sometimes our decisions are once in a lifetime, like, “I’m pregnant and I’m not ready”. What you choose to do next is a soul-searching choice. It can effect many other factors in your life.
