The Abortion Pill

The abortion pill is a medical abortion.  This type of abortion uses two drugs.  The first medication blocks the progesterone hormone which is needed for pregnancy to continue.  When used together with the second medication, it will end an early pregnancy (70 days or less since the first day of the last menstrual period or 10 wks LMP).

How is it taken?  The FDA has approved a dosing regimen:

  • on day one: the first medication is taken by mouth
  • 24 to 48 hours after taking the first medication: the second medication is taken buccally (in the cheek pouch), at a location appropriate for the patient
  • about seven to fourteen days after taking your first medication: follow-up with the healthcare provider

The documented side effects of the abortion pill include abdominal pain, severe cramping, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, dizziness, fever, and chills.

Risks include seeing embryonic parts expelled, a possible life-threatening infection known as sepsis (severe systemic infection), some failing to abort (which may require an additional surgical abortion procedure to complete the termination), undiagnosed ectopic pregnancy, and possible hemorrhaging.

Information is lacking about the long-term mental health effects of a medical abortion, particularly, how women feel about giving themselves an abortion and seeing fetal parts expelled.

According to the FDA, some women should not take the first medication if it has been more than 70 days since the first day of her last menstrual period, or if she:

  • has an ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy outside of the uterus)
  • has problems with the adrenal glands (the glands near the kidneys)
  • is currently being treated with long-term corticosteroid therapy (medications)
  • has had an allergic reaction to the drugs used in the abortion pill, or similar drugs
  • has bleeding problems or is taking anticoagulant (blood-thinning) drug products
  • has inherited porphyria
  • has an intrauterine device (IUD) in place (it must be removed before taking the first abortion pill dose)

Women who have taken the first abortion pill dose should follow their healthcare provider’s instructions including the associated risks and complications that can occur such as:

  • sustained fever, severe abdominal pain, prolonged heavy bleeding, or fainting.
  • abdominal pain or discomfort, or general malaise (“feeling sick,” including weakness, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea, with or without fever)

Though not as common, other medical abortions can include medications or lethal injections for late-term abortions.  Each comes with its procedures and risks.

A: You can get an abortion pill either through an abortion provider’s clinic or by an online mail source.  For mail order, in most cases, a telehealth appointment is required and the medication for the abortion is sent directly to you without an in-person physical examination.  A physical examination is important because it dates the pregnancy, rules out ectopic pregnancy, and determines viability (if you are at risk for miscarriage).  At Pregnancy Resource Center Medical Clinic you can receive a pre-abortion screening at no-cost by a medical professional.

A: Missed period pill is another name for the abortion pill.  Some people may think it might help them psychologically if they’re unsure about abortion.  Regardless of its name, you should know that it is an abortion.

A: Walk-ins are welcome. However, it is best to make an appointment to minimize your office wait time. Please call or text 949.334.7722, or click schedule an appointment online and for information on abortion costs, click here.

A: Absolutely. You can bring your boyfriend, family member, or friend. We will first meet with you for the initial intake. Then, provided you have given us consent to have them in the room, your guest will be able to join you.

A: You’ll be welcomed by our receptionist who will introduce you to your client advocate.  She will listen to you judgment-free and provide you with information followed by a pregnancy test.  Should your test be positive, one of our caring medical professionals will conduct a limited ultrasound to confirm if you have a viable pregnancy and date fetal age. 

A: Our tests can be performed 7 to 10 days after conception. A client with a negative result may be invited to return within 2 weeks for a repeat test if she has not had her period.  

If you have taken a home pregnancy test, you may want to confirm results with a laboratory-quality test at our center or mobile clinic. Our tests detect HCg levels within 7 to 10 after conception. 

A:  We adhere to a strict privacy and confidentiality policy. Clients will be protected from disclosure of information that violates the right to privacy except when required by law, required for public health reasons, required to avert a threat of harm to the client or a third person, or when other circumstances may reasonably warrant such use or disclosure without prior authorization (e.g., abuse reporting, suicide/homicide prevention, etc.).

A: Our professional, medical-grade lab quality pregnancy test can determine pregnancy at the first day after your first missed period. We recommend you make an appointment if you have missed a period, have any pregnancy related questions, or think you might be pregnant.

A: On-site ultrasounds are available after an initial intake with one of our client advocates.  Our limited ultrasound exams are performed by a licensed nurse sonographer or RDMS (registered sonographer) and reviewed by a licensed physician.  An ultrasound confirms a viable pregnancy and determines how far along you are.  To qualify for a limited ultrasound, you’ll need to be a minimum of 6 weeks from the first day of your last menstrual period

A: You can still meet with a member of our staff to discuss your concerns and review available options.  An ultrasound is recommended to know if your pregnancy is viable and in your uterus, since 20% – 25% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage.  Additionally, the ultrasound will show how far along you are to determine what type of abortion you would choose.  We can provide a limited ultrasound at no cost to you.
